    Default F1 cars for 2015.

The Williams and Force India Formula One teams are the first to unveil their 2015 liveries.

    Williams:

Williams was the first team to show an image of its 2015 F1 contender, namely the FW37.

The team scored a string of podiums last season, and is hoping to make the next step with the new car.

“The notion for the FW37 was to look closely at the FW36 and its performances,’” said the team's chief technical officer Pat Symonds. “We then went about recognizing what had worked well and identifying and resolving the areas that we felt needed to be improved. Although the aerodynamics of the car were impressive there is always room for improvement particularly as we handle the new 2015 nose regulations.

“The first conceptual stage of the FW37 came before the FW36 had turned a wheel. The main element to this is understanding the rule changes and how they will affect the design of the car, from here we can start see if our ideas will fit within the regulations.

“The change in regulations offered us a slight headache. The new front bulkhead and nose geometry had much more of an impact than we had initially anticipated and the effect on the aero was profound. The team have worked hard on pulling back the deficit these regulations have made for us.”

Symonds says work on FW37 was not compromised by a development push with last year's car.

“The desire to beat Ferrari to third place in the Constructors’ in 2014 meant we pushed our development through to late autumn, but the size of the team is now at a point where it was able to sustain this development whilst still working on the FW37.

“We felt we came up against design barriers in the FW36 and so took the opportunity to remove those barriers for the benefit of the performance. The FW36 carried a reasonable amount of ballast, so we were able to make alterations to the design for added performance without the fear of adding excessive mass.”

Summing up the season to come he added: “The more rule stability there is, the closer the field gets. I hope as a team we are more capable of maintaining the forward momentum to catch Mercedes, than the teams behind us are of catching us. It’s not just about stable regulations but also about the team and every individual that works here moving forward and improving.”

    Force India:

Force India unveiled its new 2015 livery in Mexico City on Wednesday, albeit on an old car.

The VJM08 is not scheduled to be seen until the second test of the season at Barcelona in February.

The livery is similar to last year with the notable exception of a change from white to silver, perhaps reflecting the team's improved position in the Mercedes pecking order now that McLaren has moved on.

New sponsors on the car include Quaker State oil - replacing Roshfrans - and NEC, which is usually associated with Sauber.

Regarding the new design team boss Vijya Mallya said: “It’s another evolution of the contemporary look we introduced last year, which reflects the growth of the team and the global brands with which we are working. I love the addition of silver, which makes the car appear more sleek and aggressive and I’m sure it’s something that will appeal to the fans as well. Our traditional team colors remain integrated in the livery, but we’ve given it a very modern twist.”

Mallya stressed that the team's move to the 60 percent Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne was the key to this year's form.

“The front of the car looks very different from what we had developed previously,” said technical director Andrew Green of the yet to be seen car. “It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we’ve been working to claw back all that performance.”

After tumbling down the Formula One pecking order in 2014, Lotus hopes the new Mercedes-powered E23 can help it climb back up.

Today, the Enstone team has given the world a first look at its 2015 challenger for drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.

Last year, that driver combo squeezed just 10 points out of the Renault-powered E22 through two eighths from Grosjean (Spain and Monaco) and a ninth from Maldonado in the U.S.

Lotus technical director Nick Chester feels better days are ahead for Lotus with the E23, which he says “represents a massive step forward.”

“It’s no secret that we struggled with last year’s car, so we’ve targeted every area that caused us an issue,” Chester said in a release. “We’ve made strong progress in the wind tunnel as well as in areas such as packaging and cooling. We expect the E23 to perform far, far better than its predecessor.”

Chester acknowledged that the new Mercedes power unit “looks to be the one area of the car which could bring us the greatest performance gain.” However, he says power isn’t the only improvement to the E23.

“The E22 did deliver good figures in the wind tunnel, even if it was difficult to unlock its potential, so we’ve paid more attention to making the characteristics of the car more adaptable,” he explained.

“In terms of the suspension, we were delivered something of a blow last year when the front-rear interconnected suspension [FRIC] was outlawed mid-season. The E23’s suspension design is specific to the updated regulations so we’re not trying to update a system originally intended to work a different way.

“We learnt a lot in many areas of the car over the course of 2014 so there are many lessons which have been applied. We know we’ve made a big step. We won’t know how our car will fare in relative terms until we’re out in action at a Grand Prix, but we certainly expect to be much more competitive than last year.”

As for driver reaction, Grosjean and Maldonado have both expressed on social media that they’re looking forward to working with the new car.

    Default McLaren MP4-30

McLaren has released the first pictures of the eagerly awaited MP4-30, the first car from the Woking team to feature a Honda power unit since 1992.

It's also the first to feature the input of former Red Bull Racing aero chief Peter Prodromou, who rejoined the team late last year, and holds the title of chief engineer.

The other key players behind the new car are technical director Tim Goss, director of engineering Matt Morris, and director of design and development programmes, Neil Oatley.

The livery of the car had been the subject of much speculation, but despite the split with Mercedes the team has stuck with silver. McLaren noted that “it features an evolved color scheme that firmly contextualises McLaren’s brand in the 21st century.” No major new sponsors appear on the car.

The team says that “in 2015 McLaren-Honda intends to maintain the momentum it achieved during the second half of 2014, when an intensive technical development program for the MP4-29 allowed the team to establish a solid position within the chasing pack.”

Ron Dennis says that the MP4-30 represents only the start of a “long journey” for McLaren and Honda, whose engine is called a RA615H Hybrid.

Dennis was keen to refer to the success the two partners achieved last time around.

“McLaren-Honda is a partnership focused on performance, technology and innovation, and there’s no better example of that than the results achieved in our first collaboration in the 1980s and 1990s,” said Dennis. “I was Team Principal all those years ago and, while I don’t tend to like looking back to the past, our previous record of sustained success was certainly instrumental in creating the confidence to make the decision to partner with Honda again.

“Now, there’s real hunger to demonstrate the capabilities of the huge talent pool we share between us, and I’m totally committed to driving progress and achieving further success.

“Although our renewed alliance began again many months ago, the launch of the McLaren-Honda MP4-30 marks the start of a lengthy journey. We’ve come a long way already and, although there’s a lot of work to do before we can expect to repeat the level of success we enjoyed together 25-or-so years ago, it’s already clear that there’s enormous synergy and potential in our partnership, and I’m positive that, together, we’ll get to where we want to be: winning Grands Prix and eventually World Championships as McLaren-Honda.”

Default Ferrari's new SF15-T is revealed

Ferrari has unveiled the SF15-T, the car with which Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen hope to reverse the team's fortunes after a difficult 2014 season.

It's also the first Ferrari that James Allison can claim full responsibility for, after he joined while last year's car was already under development.

The car carries logos from Alfa Romeo and Haas.

Suderia Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has reiterated that he has targeted at least two GP wins for the Italian team this season.

Arrivabene, who made a similar statement last month, shied away from a more ambitious target.

“I'm just realistic,” he said. “Nobody has the magic to change things when things are unchangeable. We applied certain modifications that in our opinion are quite interesting. With that I don't want to say that we are going to win the World Championship, but for sure we are committed at least to win two races.”

Regarding the SF15-T he said: “Enzo Ferrari said a long time ago the best car is a winning car. Last year we had an ugly car and it was a non-winning car on top of this. I like the car of this year in terms of aesthetics. I don't know about the performance, but it's really sexy.”

He says the personnel changes do not mean a change of philosophy at the Italian team.

“It doesn't impact the philosophy of Ferrari. The philosophy of Ferrari was dictated by the founder, Enzo Ferrari. The work we have to do is to enhance the team spirit, and the passion, that was a little bit lost in the past few years, and to look forward, to work together very hard, with one objective – to win as much as possible.”

On the subject of the drivers, he added: “They have to work together as teammates, they have to work with the team. Things I want to avoid, talking about the overall team and not only about the driver, is that everybody is pushing and working together in the same direction. I'm expecting the drivers to do the same.”

Ferrari technical boss James Allison adds that the Italian team has made big steps with its power unit, which was a major weakness last season.

“The power unit has along with the rest of the car been an area of extremely high effort to improve,” said Allison. “We had a number of issues with last year's engine and power unit. Early on in the season the power delivery was not particularly sophisticated, and it was quite tough for the drivers to get the type of throttle response that they wanted. It was improved a lot during the season and we take that a step further for the SF15-T.

“A definite weakness of last year's car was that the amount of electrical energy that we were able to recover from the turbo was not really good enough for producing competitive power levels during the race.

“That's one of the reasons why Ferrari's qualifying performance was relatively stronger compared with their race performance last year. That's an area where we've tried to change the architecture of the engine to make it a better compromise between qualifying and racing performance.

“And then plain simple horsepower. A tremendous amount of work has gone into all aspects of our combustion efficiency to try and make sure that in this fuel limited formula where every team is only allowed to burn the same amount of fuel that every single compression stroke, every single ignition stroke, is extracting the maximum amount of horsepower and putting it on the road.”

The Ferrari car clearly represents a major step forward relative to its predecessor, at least in terms of appearance. As well as much more attractive front the car has a more tightly packaged rear, which is a characteristic of other 2015 cars seen so far.

“I think all the cars on the grid are going to be more appealing around the front, around the nose, because after a few years of trying I think we've finally invented a regulation that gets what we wanted from a safety point of view, but also doesn't create the rather unappealing features of the last few years.” says Allison. “So I think everyone will look a lot prettier at the front, and the 2015 Ferrari is I think nice in that regard.

“However the back of the car is something that it noticeably different from the 2014 car, where we have been successful in pulling the bodywork much tighter to all the stuff underneath the skin. And that's been done through a lot of work, not just in the wind tunnel but also in the design part of the company to try to find radiator designs that were fundamentally more efficient, so that for every square centimeter of radiator we're able to extract more cooling this year than last, and therefore are able to close the car down at the back as a consequence.”

Default Sauber goes blue with C34

Sauber F1 Team has today unveiled its new car for the 2015 F1 season, the C34, as it looks to bounce back from its worst ever campaign and return to the top ten this year.

The Swiss team failed to score a single point in 2014, leaving it tenth in the constructors’ championship come the end of the season as financial uncertainty threatened its future both on and off track.

However, the ship appears to have now been steadied, and today’s launch of the C34 marks a fresh start for Sauber as new drivers Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr look to take the team back into the points in 2015.

Nasr’s arrival helped the team to secure sponsorship from Banco do Brasil, whose colors dominate the new car. Blue and yellow replace the grey design of 2014, seeing a significant change in the team’s image.

“2014 was a very disappointing year,” team principal Monisha Kaltenborn said. “However, this is in the past, and we now focus on what comes next.

“We have learned our lessons and are confident for the new season. We have to improve, and be able to fight for championship points.”

Kaltenborn was quick to praise the all-new driver line-up that Sauber boasts for 2015, expressing her confidence about the partnership between Ericsson and Nasr.

“I am delighted about our two new drivers who bring a breath of fresh air,” she said. “Both are young, talented and highly motivated. On their way to Formula 1 both stood out through victories in Formula BMW and Formula 3. Both then finished this career progression off in the GP2 Series.

“While Marcus looks back to one season in Formula 1, Felipe will have his rookie year in which he comes fully prepared due to his role as test and reserve driver at Williams last year. I feel confident with regard to our drivers.”

The car does appear to be quite light on sponsors, but both Nasr and Ericsson do have significant backing. Many of the team’s Mexican backers will have departed at the end of 2014 along with Esteban Gutierrez, who has since joined Ferrari, but a new deal with computing giant Hewlett-Packard was announced four days ago. With neither Marussia nor Caterham looking capable of making a late revival and reaching the grid in Melbourne, Sauber enters the 2015 season as the defacto backmarker. However, it will be the mission of Kaltenborn, Ericsson and Nasr to fight back and get the good times flowing once again at Hinwil.
