Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) and Dish Network Corp (NASDAQISH) have collaborated to make available subscription video on demand (SVOD) on the TV provider’s set-top box. Dish Network will integrate Netflix service into its second generation set-top box, called Hopper digital video recorder, providing customers a direct access to the streaming service.

The streaming giant had been trying hard to reach a strategic agreement with the larger satellite service providers in the country for months now. Till now, Netflix had been able to land deals with international Pay-TV service providers or mid to small-scale cable operators, including Virgin Media, UK’s top television and broadband service provider, Suddenlink Communications, and Atlantic Broadband in the US. The Netflix-Dish Network partnership marks the first time that the online streaming provider will integrate its service to easily reach 14 million Dish subscribers.

Most Pay-TV providers had been reluctant to reach an agreement with Netflix as they believed that integration of streaming service will be in conflict with their own SVOD services. They viewed the integration to allow for an easier access to Netflix’s shows and movies through their set-top boxes, while endangering their own streaming revenue.

Dish Network Senior Vice President of Product Management Vivek Kehmka stated: “Pairing Netflix with Hopper represents the consolidation of two incredible video experiences. It gives our customers easy access to their favorite shows and movies, on both Dish and Netflix, without ever having to leave their Hopper.”

Customers subscribed to Dish’s digital video recorder can access the online streaming service by the click of a button. The members not subscribed to the online video streaming service can simply create an account in the set-top application or sign up through Netflix’s webpage for Dish members, called “http://www.netflix.com/dish”. The companies have not yet disclosed any billing relationship or if there would be any incentives for consumers to avail bundling offers if they subscribe to both entertainment service providers simultaneously.

For now, the integration is only possible on Dish’s Hopper but over the next few months the companies are expected to roll out Netflix app to additional video recorders as well, including Joey, Wireless Joey, and Super Joey boxes.
