Is 'Money' still the best in the world?

Pound-for-pound king's status in question despite win over Maidana in rematch

You knew things were changing when Warren Buffett replaced pop star Justin Bieber on The Money Team. The 84-year-old billionaire looked decidedly out of his element when he visited Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the gym during the buildup to Floyd's rematch with Marcos Maidana -- especially when the "Oracle of Omaha" stuck a TMT cap on his head and donned a pair of boxing trunks.
Unless Buffett was giving his new BFF advice on how to maintain his lavish lifestyle after boxing's money spigot is turned off, the new addition to Mayweather's posse was little more than a photo op and a giggle. It was what took place inside the ring Saturday that really mattered, and things were changing there too.
One of the postfight headlines on this site read "Mayweather's Still Got It," and in many ways that's absolutely true. He has still got his welterweight titles, an undefeated record, enough $100 bills to paper the MGM Grand and a spot reserved for his Hall of Fame plaque in Canastota.

Making The Rounds: Will Money Talk?

Dan Rafael, Brian Campbell and Ray Flores look at what's next for Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Nobody born north of Argentina would question that Mayweather beat Maidana more convincingly this time and that he deserved the unanimous decision. But whether Mayweather has still "got it" depends upon what "it" means at this point in his remarkable career.
Any criticism of Mayweather inevitably brings an onslaught of grievances from his fans, ranging from questions regarding the critic's competency to accusations of racism. Many, though certainly not all, of Mayweather's supporters seem unable to overcome their own prejudices to make a coherent appraisal. Therefore, let's start by considering Mayweather's own assessment of his most recent performance.
"I felt sharper in the first fight," said Mayweather, shortly after his arm was raised in victory. "This time I felt dry and dead."
Dry and dead are not adjectives usually associated with Mayweather, particularly when you hear them come out of his own mouth. Except for a handful of scary moments, he was pretty much in control throughout the fight but often looked uncomfortable nonetheless. He missed a lot more punches than usual and ended up with a swollen nose and a busted lip. And who knows what would have happened if the bell had not rung the moment Maidana's right hand buckled Mayweather's knees and sent him staggering backward into the ropes at the end of the third round?
These were worrying signs, but Mayweather did what he had to do the way he had to do it and got the job done. You can credit his professionalism for that. Even so, when you call yourself "The Best Ever," just getting the job done isn't enough. You're going to be held to a higher standard, and it was refreshing to hear Mayweather evaluate himself with such candor.
Although his minions would consider it sacrilege, it's time to ask if Mayweather is still the pound-for-pound king. Like the alpha male in a wolf pack, his status has gone unchallenged for a long time, maybe too long.
[+] EnlargeAl Bello/Getty ImagesFloyd Mayweather Jr. gave himself a grade of "C-minus" for his victory over Marcos Maidana in Saturday's rematch.

Ask yourself if Mayweather looked like the best fighter in the world Saturday. How about in the first Maidana fight? The Miguel Cotto fight?
During and after Mayweather-Maidana II, social media bristled with comments from fans and insiders. One of the more provocative posts came from David Lobach, who tweeted: "Pac looked better against a better fighter in Tim Bradley than Mayweather looked against Maidana either time."
It's a reasonable point of view and worthy of consideration, but Manny Pacquiao has a Nov. 22 match against Chris Algieri, who might present more of a challenge than many anticipate. Afterward, we will have a better handle on where Pacquiao ranks in comparison with Mayweather and other P4P entrants.
Mayweather's brand has suffered since signing the insanely lucrative, six-fight deal with Showtime. The quality of his opposition (except for Canelo Alvarez) and alarming outbreak of narcolepsy among pay-per-view customers is only part of the problem. There is also renewed focus on his controversial personal life.
The confluence of the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal and the lawsuit filed by Mayweather's former fiancée Shantel Jackson -- for assault and battery, civil harassment, defamation and false imprisonment -- was bad enough. But when Mayweather opened his mouth in defense of Rice, it became the biggest story going into the fight, and his subsequent apology did not change the narrative.
Instead of the tale of the tape, a copy of Jackson's suit was plastered all over the Internet, complete with sordid details of the boxer's alleged abuse. The validity of these accusations have yet to be proved in court, but the backlash, intensified by Mayweather's ill-chosen comments about the Rice situation, has been substantial.

Whom Mayweather chooses as his opponents for the remaining two bouts on his Showtime deal (and how he performs against them) will have a meaningful impact on his legacy and bank balance. He could maximize both in a single fight, providing Pacquiao was in the other corner. But that makes way too much sense for today's polarized boxing industry.
Yes, Mayweather teased us in the immediate aftermath of his second matchup with Maidana, saying, "If the Pacquiao fight presents itself, let's make it happen." But as far as Floyd is concerned, "presents itself" probably amounts to the same old, same old: Pacquiao has to first ditch Top Rank and HBO and fight for Al Haymon on Showtime.
Naturally, a showdown with Pacquiao, even at this late stage of their careers, would go a long way toward shifting attention away from the courtroom and toward boxing. It would a bold move on Mayweather's part. But despite the accolades and financial bounty it would bring, there might be too much at stake to risk it -- and not just inside the ring.
If Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum continue their reconciliation and work together, they will be a formidable force, one that would have a fighting chance of standing up to the Haymon juggernaut. Mayweather is the financial foundation of Haymon's boxing empire, and nobody in his vast and ever-expanding stable could garner a fraction of the revenue Mayweather generates. Even with all his baggage, Mayweather is essential to keeping the cash flowing and the ledger book in the black.
Mayweather can still dazzle with his near-flawless technique, which was the case in the Maidana rematch whenever he connected with that quick, unerring right of his, ripped home beautiful body shots or gracefully spun out of corners. But instead of a seamless flow, the magic comes in spurts now, just enough to remind us of who he is and what he can do. In between there's a lot of holding and backpedaling.

    Malignaggi Recaps Mayhem

Paulie Malignaggi joins "Making The Rounds" to recap Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana II and ponder the chances of a Manny Pacquiao fight.

At times Mayweather is reminiscent of a matador who has brought the bull to a state of exhaustion with exquisite cape work but is too afraid of the horns to finish the job. In the lingo of the bullring, this sort of matador is known as desconfiado, one lacking confidence to go in for the kill. This is not the same as cobarde, which means coward -- an important distinction to be sure. But when you get right down to it, the ultimate difference between the two blood rituals is that there are no decisions in corrida de toros.
Mayweather is such a masterful boxer and galvanizing personality that he has become the richest athlete in the world despite his reluctance to place himself in jeopardy in order to satisfy the crowd's bloodlust. There is evidence, however, that his act is growing old along with him. Pay-per-view sales are down, and so is the number of people willing to bet on his fights.
"Floyd Mayweather is the biggest draw in boxing, but Las Vegas gamblers weren't interested in his rematch with Marcos Maidana," wrote Dave Purdum, who covers the gambling industry for ESPN.com.
Even the most fanatical Mayweather followers would have to admit that the sun is starting to set on their hero's superb career. He has threatened to walk away numerous times over the years but never sounded as sincere as he did after the Maidana rematch, when he told ESPN Deportes' Bernardo Osuna that he had lost his passion for boxing and it had become work.
Countless fighters have soldiered on after the passion had been pounded out of them, typically because they needed the money. Fortunately for him, Mayweather doesn't have to worry about that. Forbes estimated that the second Maidana fight boosted his career earnings to almost $420 million. That doesn't put him in Buffett's league, but it's still a staggering sum.
Floyd might have lost his passion for boxing, but his appetite for money remains as ravenous as ever.
