The 2014 Little League World Series started Thursday and Puerto Rico opened the tournament with a 16-3 drubbing of Australia.
In the first inning of that game, we got to meet this year's LLWS giant (I mean that in the nicest possible way), first baseman Erick Figueroa of Puerto Rico. He's listed at ... ready for this? ... 6-feet-4 and 229 pounds:
Every year there is one giant kid at the LLWS. The kid who hit his growth spurt early and has to face all the awkwardness of being so big so young and deal with wild speculation about his "true" age. Then again, you can squash your enemies with ease at that size, so maybe it's not so bad after all.
A quick search of the Baseball-Reference.com Play Index tells me there are only 32 position players standing at least 6-4 and 229 pounds in MLB this season, including Josh Hamilton, David Ortiz and Justin Smoak, all of whom are listed at 6-4 and 230 pounds.
